The Hidden Dangers of Sun Damage to Your Eyes

The sun remains the main light source for humans and animals. However, the sun is not entirely safe for us, mainly because we do not have fur. It becomes dangerous to our skin when we spend too much time outside. Many people know about sunburn and actively work to prevent it. However, most people do not know about the dangers posed by the sun to their eyes.

Sun damage to the eyes happens over lengthy exposure. The duration of the exposure is directly proportional to the degree of damage. Also, sun damage effects like eye pain linger after you cross the threshold. However, others take a long time to develop and cause more long-lasting effects. These are the hidden dangers of sun damage.

What Causes Sun Damage?

If you're not careful, ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun, a relatively potent source, can harm you. At its worst, excessive UV exposure can raise your chance of contracting various eye illnesses. The sun is the greatest source of UV light that we have access to, and it produces several types of UV light, including:

·      UVC

The earth's ozone layer shields all these kinds of rays, even though they theoretically have the greatest potential for harm. We are only exposed to this radiation because of the ozone hole.

·      UVB

These slightly less powerful rays, which the ozone layer only partially blocks, cause a suntan. They may harm your eyes and skin when absorbed in large quantities.

·      UVA

They can penetrate the cornea, although these rays are less frequently linked to serious eye or skin issues. According to studies, they may contribute to macular degeneration and cataracts.

What Are the Hidden Dangers of Sun Damage?

Sun damage causes several issues. Some issues, like, ultraviolet keratitis, are temporary. However, other conditions are much more severe and may lead to vision loss.

·      Cataracts

Did you know that unprotected UV exposure can expedite the development of cataracts? While cataracts are most frequently linked to aging, wearing the right UV-blocking sunglasses can lower your risk of getting the condition.

Cataracts result from the natural clouding of the eye's lens, which impairs vision. The only treatment for cataracts is surgically removing the eye's natural lens. A synthetic lens is used to restore sight and replace the obscured lens.

·      Macular Degeneration

Essential for sharp vision, the middle region of the retina—the macula—is compromised in macular degeneration. According to certain research, sun exposure may make age-related macular degeneration worse.

However, researchers are uncertain about how UV light impacts the development of the condition. The development of this disease can be avoided with thorough eye exams and sun protection.

·      Pterygia and a Pinguecula

Your sclera may develop pinguecula and pterygia from too much sun exposure. A pinguecula cannot develop onto the cornea and impair vision, although a pterygium can. The best strategy to prevent the growth of these scleral growths is to wear enough UV protection.
